CALVARY HOSPITAL MARKS NATIONAL WOMEN PHYSICIANS DAY FOR THE FIRST TIME
NEW YORK, NY, February 3, 2020 – Five years ago in 2016, the American Medical Women’s Association (c. 1915) launched National Women Physicians Day on February 3rd to celebrate the pioneering role and contributions that women have made to date in this demanding profession.
The date coincides with the birthday of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman in the U.S. to earn a medical degree, in 1849. This year is the 199th anniversary since Blackwell’s birth.
For the first time, Calvary Hospital is spotlighting the contributions of their 10 female physicians, who comprise more than 50% of their medical team. They include seven who work at the Bronx and Brooklyn campuses: Alma Carrington, Myra Davila, Devmani Jaitly, Maria Lief, Vera Miller, Rachelle Parker, and Irina Makarevich; as well as three physicians who care for patients in the community – Neda Vodenitcharova, Margaret Squillace and Gail Chrzanowski.
The PCI, which was established in 1985, is the hospital’s research and education department. Each year, more than 1,000 healthcare professionals, medical students and FDNY EMTs visit Calvary to learn our model of palliative care. Visitors to date have included physicians, nurses, social workers and chaplains from 30 countries.
CalvaryCare® is available at our 200-bed Bronx Campus, 25-bed Brooklyn Campus, 18-bed unit at The Dawn Greene Hospice Unit at Mary Manning Walsh Home in Manhattan, 13-bed unit at Ozanam Hall of Queens Nursing Home in Bayside, in the community through Calvary Hospice, and through a comprehensive bereavement support program for children, teens and adults.
