As a recipient of the DAISY Award, Kalmalee received several nominations from patient family members. The most notable comments from family members include:

  •  “Kalmalee Golden deserves to be recognized for her dedication to supporting patients and families at Calvary Hospital. Kal (as she likes to be called) has gone above and beyond the call of duty in providing care for my wife and supporting my family during this time. Kal made sure that she greeted ALL with a smile every time she entered the room, laughed at our jokes, and most importantly reassured us that my wife was receiving the best possible care. When Kal’s shift began a sense of relief fell upon my family because we knew Kal would give 100% to my wife! Kal was our “favorite” due to her professionalism, manners, and caring ways. All should strive to be like Kal. We cannot thank her enough for her assurance and kind dedication.”
  • “Kal is very comforting to me always, she is very respectful and is there for all my needs and above all is a compassionate person. The love she shows is felt by me.”
  • “Great nurse, a very caring nurse. Does everything she can do to make a patient comfortable and explains to family members what is going on. ”

Kalmalee was born in the island nation of Jamaica, raised in the Bronx, and currently resides in Queens, NY. She graduated in 2003 from Plattsburgh State University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and is currently a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nurses.

DAISY (www.daisyfoundation.org) is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The foundation was formed in January 2000, by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 of complications related to Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). Patrick really liked Cinnabons at the end of his life and always made sure there was enough of this culinary treat for all the nurses in his unit. As a result, all DAISY honorees are treated to Cinnabons at every presentation. Each hospital also receives a special banner to hang in the recipient’s unit as a way to celebrate the DAISY Award honors and the nursing profession.

To date, 700 health care facilities (U.S., Canada, Middle East, and Germany, etc.) now give out DAISY awards to honor excellence on their nursing staff. The organization’s main goals are 1) to pay tribute to nurses who make such an enormous difference in the lives of people they touch every single day; 2) fund grants for nurses who do research and evidence-based practices in the field of cancer; 3) to give out the DAISY faculty award to inspiring teachers in nursing school.
