Donald Mooney
Mr. and Mrs. Donald F. Mooney have supported Calvary Hospital for over 16 years. Mr. Mooney shares why they continue to support Calvary in memory of his beloved father, Donald Mooney, Esq.
What was your connection to Calvary?
My father was suffering from stage IV cancer and he was dealing with the final stages of the disease. We were planning to bring to him to Calvary Hospital after we took a tour because we were really impressed with the hospital.
Unfortunately, on the day we were scheduled to send him to Calvary his vital signs took a turn for the worse and he became comatose. He was rushed to another hospital and passed on November 1st, 1999.
Tell us about your father
He was a veteran of World War II. He raised seven children and made sure we received a good Catholic education. After the war he went in to law practice as a maritime lawyer. He was also an avid tennis player.
What moral legacy did he leave?
My father was a moral person and was always concerned for the unfortunate. I have applied that to my own life and I do my best to help others.
What is the biggest achievement in your life thus far?
Getting married, because I found my soulmate. Too many wonderful things to say about her, I cant list only one but her patience is treasured the most. We are married for 15 years!
What is your life mantra?
The beauty of the world is something that inspires me. It inspires me to give back my time, knowledge and support.
What inspires you to continue to give to Calvary?
The primary mission of Calvary inspires us to continue to give every year. Your commitment to non-abandonment and caring for patients and families with compassion, care and comfort has always stood out in my mind.
My wife and I agreed that it was a great place for us to support. We also heard the ads on the radio.
Whenever a friend or loved one of ours passes away we contribute in memory of their friends and family to Calvary instead of giving flowers and gifts to the families.
Donald F. Mooney is a religion teacher at Archbishop Molloy High School and he is a Fordham graduate.
