Calvary Hospital has awarded the 2019 Eddie Higgins Scholarship to an outstanding student, Steven Rivera. To win the scholarship, Steven had to demonstrate academic excellence, leadership skills, commitment to community service, financial need, and the determination and spirit of Eddie Higgins. Mr. Rivera’s mother, Wanda Torres, who currently works in the Hospital’s Hospice Department, has been with Calvary for 14 years.

Steven, 17, is a recent graduate of Bronx High School for the Visual Arts in Bronx, NY.  During his time there he partnered with his local community church to feed and clothe the homeless and the less fortunate. This fall, he matriculates at Hostos Community College in Bronx, NY for an undergraduate degree in Dental Hygiene. His ultimate goal is to obtain a Master of Science Dentistry (M.S.D.) degree and become a Periodontal Specialist. Steven and his family reside in the Bronx, New York.

The Eddie Higgins Scholarship is named after a cherished member of the Calvary family who came to the hospital as a young boy. Eddie was hospitalized intermittently for 15 years at Calvary until his death in 1982 at the age of 29. Eddie is remembered for his love of God and his remarkable courage despite his illness. Calvary has given this annual scholarship since 1985.
