Calvary Hospital hosted its 35th Annual Golf & Tennis Classic at Brae Burn Country Club and Century Country Club in Westchester County raising over $250,000 for its programs and services for patients and their families. More than 150 participants attended the event, which included a brunch, dinner, silent auction, and raffle prizes.
In tribute to the commitment made by Calvary’s “Healthcare Heroes”, each tennis player and golfer played in honor of a Calvary staff member. When players won on the course or court, their employee “partner” also received a $100 Amazon gift card.
The event co-chairs were Maryann Farrell, Dennis M. Berberich, and Joseph L. Nunziata. Major sponsors included: The Robert Goelet Foundation, ArchCare, the Berberich Family, the Deglomini Family, Meridian Risk, Gallagher, Hudson Valley Mechanical Contractors Association, Kiamie 411, Manhattan Beer Distributors, the Pelham Civic Association, Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity, LaSorsa Auto Group, and New Rochelle Chevrolet.
Each year, the Dennis Berberich Scholarship is awarded to a Calvary Care Technician (CCT) who seeks to further their career in nursing and demonstrates a high degree of motivation. This year’s award recipient was presented to Ellen Boway.
Ellen, also referred to as “Sister Ellen” by her colleagues, has worked at the Bronx campus for 15 years. Starting at Calvary as a volunteer, she was inspired by Calvary’s mission and was presented the opportunity to become a CCT in 2008. Since then, she has motivated her colleagues with her faith and passion for upholding Calvary’s core values of compassion, love, dignity, non-abandonment and caring.
Ellen starts nursing school in the Fall of this year. When asked why she was interested in becoming a nurse, she stated, “I am a single parent of two college-age children. I want them to know that education is important, and it is never too late.” Ellen’s goal after completing her nursing degree is to become a Wound Care Nurse.
This year’s event is dedicated in loving memory of Dennis E. Berberich, a devoted member of the Calvary Hospital Board and the Chairman of the Calvary Fund Board from 1985 until his passing in 2002. Dennis dedicated his life’s work to the growth and success of the Hospital’s programs of care. Dennis was an enthusiastic supporter of the Calvary Hospital Golf Classic, and his love of tennis resulted in the addition of tennis as part of the annual outing, proceeds from the tennis portion go directly towards the Dennis Berberich Scholarship Fund. Since 2003, the scholarship fund has provided more than $60,000 in aid to CT’s who are eager to further their career in nursing.
