Founded in 1899, Calvary is the first and only U.S. hospital dedicated to the palliative care of adult patients with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. To date, we have provided end-of-life care to more patients than any other single entity in this country.
Our philosophy focuses on treating the person and not just the disease. It means personalized custom care that you cannot get anywhere else. We also focus on caring for patients and their families. We embrace patients from all faith backgrounds.
CalvaryCare® is offered at four inpatient facilities: 200-bed hospital in the Bronx; 25-bed Brooklyn Campus; 18-bed Dawn Greene Hospice at Mary Manning Walsh Home in Manhattan; and a 9-bed unit at Ozanam Hall of Queens Nursing Home in Bayside. Through Calvary@Home, we provide home care and home hospice to many patients throughout the greater New York area.
Calvary is the only hospice care provider in New York City backed by its own hospital. As patients’ medical needs evolve, Calvary is able to easily transfer patients between home hospice care and our acute care inpatient facilities.
“My father, Brian McMurrough, was a New York City fireman who placed himself in harm’s way every day. His humility prevented him from talking about his courage and nobility. He would much rather spread his optimistic perspective of life, which would become his legacy. Dad loved life… he had a passion for people… and fervent respect for his Catholic faith.
So when a terminal illness provided no other option but hospice care, we knew that there was only one place for him to live his remaining days: Calvary Hospital. And live he did! Calvary immediately relieved his physical pain and emotional stress. He became involved in all of the therapeutic and fun activities, including gardening. He went to Mass every day. For the time that he was there, his broad Irish smile brought so much happiness to others. We are so thankful that Calvary allowed him to truly live each day of his life to the fullest.”
